Edmond Hyundai is proud to see a Hybrid in the Hyundai Lineup. The all-new Hyundai Sonata Hybrid is the next-generation of Hyundai. This mid-sized sedan is the first of the Hyundai Lineup to join hybrid technology. The Sonata Hybrid is combining to two well-known Hybrid strategies into one vehicle.
According to Mark Rechtin, a writer for Automotive News, “Hyundai is joing the fray with the next stage of hybrid technology, both in terms of battery power and in how the power is delivered to the wheels.”
The Hybrid version of the Sonata shares the same platform, doors, roofline and glass with the gas-powered models. Although the Sonata and Sonata Hybrid shares similar features, under the hood is a different story. This hybrid carries a 2.4-liter Atkinson cycle four-cylinder engine with a 30-kilowatt permanent-magnet motor.
According to Automotive News, “The Atkinson cycle closes the intake valves later than normal to improve fuel economy and cut emissions in hybrid powertrains.”
Hyundai decided to go an untraditional route going with a 6-speed automatic transmission for better electric traction allowing drivers the choice of better performance or better fuel-economy.
Lee Ki-sang, senior vice president of Hyundai’s hybrid vehicle engineering group told Automative News, “The most important thing was how smooth and fast we could control the engine clutch [between engine-powered and hybrid-drive modes] without sacrificing driveability.”
