Vehicle Profile: The 2012 Hyundai Veloster

Hyundai aims to start a revolution, and it has just the vehicle to lead the charge: The all new 2012 Veloster, a showcase of innovation set to turn the sporty-compact-coupe segment on its head. Driven by a mandate from Hyundai to conquer this segment, designers of the Veloster broke new ground in terms of utility, connectivity and accessibility. They also managed to deliver best-in-class fuel economy straight out of the box.

Intent on pumping new life into a class often bogged down by yawn-inducing designs, Hyundai stylists looked to racing motorcycles for inspiration when shaping the 2012 Veloster. The result is a sporty body that’s aggressively raked, yet broadly fluid in its proportions. The Veloster offers the functionality of a true hatchback and easy access to the backseat via a forward-hinged third door mounted flush on the car’s passenger’s side.

Hyundai engineers also succeeded in setting a new standard for non-hybrid fuel economy and emissions in a sporty coupe. The Veloster boasts the smallest displacement engine in the Hyundai lineup to feature Gasoline Direct Injection (GDI). Throw in other high-efficiency technology such as Dual Continuously Variable Valve Timing (DCVVT) and variable induction, and the all-new Gamma 1.6-liter four-cylinder cranks out 138 hp – good for a best-in-class specific output of 86.3 hp per liter of displacement. The new Gamma four-cylinder also earned Ultra-Low Emissions Vehicle (ULEV) certification.

Power runs to the front wheels via a standard six-speed manual transmission. The optional gearbox is a new six-speed EcoShift™ dual-clutch transmission (DCT) designed in-house by Hyundai. DCT technology delivers faster gear changes than a standard automatic transmission while increasing efficiency by doing away with traditional torque converters.

Select the Active Eco mode on the EcoShift DCT and engine performance and shift patterns are modified to deliver as much as a seven percent increase in gas mileage. In fact, the Veloster breaks out of the gate posting the top fuel economy in this segment, estimated at up to 40 mpg highway. That rating outdoes even the smaller Honda CR-Z Hybrid.

Another factor helping to keep the Veloster fuel thrifty is its light weight – just under 2,600 pounds. Despite going so easy on the scale, the Veloster manages to deliver the most interior room of any sporty compact, offering a total interior volume of 105.3 cubic feet including 15.5 cubic feet of maximum cargo space, which dwarfs competitors like the CR-Z (only 74.2 cubic feet of interior volume) and the MINI Clubman (89.2 cubic feet).

Light weight also contributes to agile handling, a quality amplified in the Veloster by its sport-tuned electric power steering, fully independent MacPherson strut front suspension and innovative V-torsion beam rear suspension, which includes an integrated 23 mm stabilizer bar – another Hyundai first.

Veloster keeps you safe with six airbags and a host of driver-assistance technology. Four-wheel-disc antilock brakes (ABS) with Brake Assist and Electronic Brakeforce Distribution (EBD) come as standard equipment. So do Vehicle Stability Management (VSM), Electronic Stability Control (ESC) and Hillstart Assist Control (HAC), which prevents the Veloster from rolling backward when you start off on a steep incline.

Taking safety to an even higher level – and keeping you connected like never before – is the Hyundai Blue Link™ telematics system. Blue Link is a subscription-based service (following a no-cost introductory period) that offers a bounty of features designed to simplify your life behind the wheel.

Count on features such as Automatic Crash Notification (ACN) and Assistance, turn-by-turn navigation, remote door unlock, location sharing, e-mail-delivered maintenance alerts, a live Stolen Vehicle Recovery service and smartphone-accessed remote start and vehicle locater. You can even dictate and send text messages hands-free.

The technology wave keeps rolling with must-haves like Bluetooth connectivity, iPod/USB auxiliary jacks, an RCA jack and a 115-volt power outlet to support gaming consoles. The standard seven-inch touchscreen display features Pandora Internet radio and Gracenote music display, which offers automatic playlisting and enhanced voice recognition.

Sound is served with a standard 196-watt AM/FM/CD/MP3 audio system with six speakers. Dedicated audiophiles can choose the 450-watt Dimension Premium Audio System with eight speakers (including subwoofer) and external amplifier. Both systems are equipped with an XM Satellite Radio interface built into the head unit.

The interior of the Veloster shames the competition with high-quality materials and thoughtful design. The motorcycle theme carries over from the exterior with metallic trim, tailpipe-inspired air vents and a teardrop-shaped center console reminiscent of a sport bike’s fuel tank.

Highline options on the Veloster include a massive panoramic sunroof, front foglights, alloy pedals, a leather-wrapped steering wheel and shiftknob, a Rear Backup Camera and two types of 18-inch alloy wheels including one with segment-exclusive painted inserts (17-inch aluminum wheels are standard).

The Veloster adds one more vital attribute to its slate of class-leading qualities: Value, backed up by a suite of comprehensive warranty packages including 10-year/100,000-mile powertrain protection and five years of complimentary roadside assistance.
